چکیده

The importance of wind observations for meteorological analysis has been recognized for many years. The current global observing system lacks a uniform distribution of tropospheric wind measurements, especially in the tropics, southern hemisphere, and northern hemisphere oceans. A Doppler wind lidar (DWL), mounted on a spaceborne platform, has the potential to provide a global three-dimensional coverage of wind data. The European Space Agency (ESA) has decided to fly a DWL on a polar orbiting satellite platform in 2007 as part of the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM) called Aeolus. The proposed DWL is a non-scanning single perspective instrument, operating in the ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum, providing profiles of line-of-sight (LOS) wind components from detected light backscattered from the illuminated atmospheric volume. The concept has been simulated and was used in observation system simulation experiments (OSSE) to assess its potential impact on numerical weather prediction and climate processes. This paper describes the simulation of Aeolus LOS wind component profiles and its expected quality in cloud-free and cloudy conditions

Impact Assessment of a Doppler Wind Lidar in Space on Atmospheric Analyses and Numerical Weather Prediction

Wind profiles from space would help to fill in data sparse areas over the oceans, the tropics, and the southern hemisphere. ESA has conducted a phase A study for the Earth Explorer Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM). A polar satellite with a Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) on board is proposed for this mission and which is described in this session by Ingmann. The DWL measures wind profiles in the tro...

Diagnostic Wind Model Initialization over Complex Terrain Using the Airborne Doppler Wind Lidar Data

An initialization method using airborne Doppler wind lidar data was developed and evaluated for a massconsistent diagnostic wind model over complex terrain. The wind profiles were retrieved from the airborne lidar using a conical scanning scheme and a signal processing algorithm specifically designed for the airborne lidar system. An objective data analysis method in complex terrain was then ap...

Computer simulation of coherent Doppler lidar measurement of wind velocity and retrieval of turbulent wind statistics

C. Werner DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics D-82234 Wessling, Germany E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. We describe the algorithms for the simulation of cw and pulsed coherent Doppler wind lidar operation in a turbulent atmosphere and the methods to estimate the mean wind and the parameters of small-scale wind turbulence from lidar data. The algorithms are realized as LabView compute...

Adm-aeolus – Esa’s Space-borne Wind Profiling Lidar

The ‘Living Planet Programme’ of the European Space Agency (ESA) is gaining momentum. Six Earth Explorer missions are currently being implemented including ADM-Aeolus, ESA’s Doppler Wind LIDAR (DWL) mission. The Aeolus mission will demonstrate the capability of a space-borne high spectral resolution DWL to accurately measure wind profiles in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere (0-30 km)....

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Three-Dimensional Wind Retrieval: Application of MUSCAT to Dual-Doppler Lidar

During the field campaign of the Terrain-induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) in the spring of 2006, Doppler lidar measurements were taken in the complex terrain of the Californian Owens Valley for six weeks. While fast three-dimensional (3D) wind analysis from measured radial wind components is well established for dual weather radars, only the feasibility was shown for dual-Doppler lidars. A comp...
